Women's Basketball Struggles at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rider University women's basketball team fell 84-58 to preseason CAA favorite Drexel Thursday evening. The Broncs fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Dragons improve to 1-0.

The sides swapped baskets early with Makayla Firebaugh (Winchester, VA/James Wood) scoring nine points in the opening quarter for the Broncs, but CAA Preseason Player of the Year, Keishana Washington had 14 as Drexel led 20-15 after one.

After a Rider bucket to open the second, the Dragons hit back-to-back threes and then converted an and-one to extend the lead to 12. The Dragons would extend the run to 17-2, making it a 37-19 game. Amanda Mobley (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) hit a three that beat the second-quarter buzzer, cutting the deficit to 47-29.

Neither side could make a significant run in the third, as the Dragons maintained a 68-47 lead after three. Jessika Schiffer (Iserlohn, Germany/Deutschhaus Gymnasium Würzburg) heated up with eight points in the quarter. Schiffer carried the momentum into the fourth, scoring the Broncs first five points in the final frame. Leading 72-52, Drexel went on a 10-2 run that iced the game.

Quotes & Notes
"We've got to be a lot tighter with the basketball. We've got to pay attention to our details and our fundamentals a lot more. Right now, I'm more concerned with our defense."

"Our offense will be fine. We'll Click. We'll execute. We did some great execution tonight. We didn't give ourselves enough opportunities because of the turnovers, but we've got to get some stops." – Head Coach Lynn Milligan

- Drexel leads the all-time series 22-9. This is just the second meeting between the teams in the Lynn Milligan era, both Drexel victories.
- Victoria Toomey (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) finished with 12 and is the lone Bronc to score in double figures in each of Rider's games this season.
- Madison Johnson (West Orange, NJ/Union Catholic) made her debut in a Bronc uniform, playing two minutes.
