Field Hockey Cruises to Shutout Win at Stonehill

NORTH EASTON, MA – The Rider University field hockey team was dominant Friday afternoon, defeating Stonehill 8-0. The win improves the Broncs to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the NEC. The Skyhawks fall to 2-8 overall, including a 1-3 league record.

Rider started quickly, scoring in the opening minute when Abby Hartwell (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Regional) made a long pass to the top of the circle that found the stick of Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra). Perales tipped the ball ahead to Semra Said (Mannheim, Germany/Feudenheim Gymnasium Mannheim), who beat the goalie to put Rider up 1-0.

Later in the quarter, Sierra Giuliano (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) ripped a shot off a penalty corner that was saved. Maeve Riehman (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll) gathered the rebound and fired home a shot to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Still in the first, Giuliano made a long right to left pass in the circle that found Perales on the back post. The freshman tipped the ball into the cage, making it a 3-0 game.

The Broncs found another opportunity late in the first, drawing a penalty corner. Giuliano ripped the shot from the top of the circle that Lyric Scott (Union, NJ/Union) tipped by the goalie to make it 4-0 after the opening 15 minutes.

Early in the second, the Broncs scored again on a corner. Perales made the insert to Giuliano, who fired from the top of the circle just inside the right post, making it 5-0, where the score would remain until the half.

Early in the third quarter, Indy Zoontjens (Hilversum, Netherlands/Alberdingk Thijm College) drove down the right side, she made a centering pass that was deflected by a Stonehill defender, but still found the stick of Perales, who tapped home the goal.

The Broncs weren't done scoring in the third. After a self start just outside the circle, Hartwell played a long ball that Said got a touch on in the circle before the ball found its way into the cage.

The Broncs would score again before the end of the quarter. On a penalty corner, the Broncs got the ball to the mouth of the goal. From there, Kiera Guckavan (Middletown, PA/Middletown Area) pushed the ball out of the scrum and into the net to make it 8-0.
