Men's Soccer Falls to Quinnipiac

Broncs control action early, but fall to Bobcats

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's soccer team fell to Quinnipiac, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon on Ben Cohen Field. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-7-2 (1-2-1 MAAC), while the Bobcats improve to 8-3-1 (3-1-0 MAAC).

Rider controlled the early action, taking the game's first six shots and putting five of them on target. But Quinnipiac goalkeeper Karl Netzell collected all five of his saves for the game in the span and the Bobcats eventually broke through with a Sam McCann goal in the 38th minute. Consecutive thru balls from Tomas Svecula to Erik Langwagen to McCann set up McCann for the finish.

McCann would score again in the 55th minute, again off a Langwagen assist. Langwagen lofted a cross into the box overtop of the Rider defense to find McCann's head from point-blank range. Quinnipiac kept the pressure on, scoring once again in the 69th minute. Off a broken corner kick, Brage Aasen crossed from the goal line to Alexander Stjernegaard near the top of the 18-yard box and Stjernegaard fired with the right foot inside the right post for the 3-0 lead.

- Quinnipiac cut Rider's lead in the all-time series to 7-5. All 12 games have taken place since the Bobcats joined the MAAC for the 2013 season. Rider had won seven of the last nine meetings prior to Wednesday. The Bobcats have now scored three goals in each of their last two visits to Ben Cohen Field, including a 3-1 win in 2019.
- Guillaume Veinante (Bayonne, France/Faculte des métier de Rennes) made his 11th-straight start in net and made three saves in defeat.
- Veinante, Guillaume Sarrabayrouse (Toulose, France/Pierre Paul Riquet), Regis Dulck (Strasbourg, France/Univ. of Strasbourg), Lenny Cidolit (Montpellier, France/Montpellier Univ.), Adel Al Masude (Brussels, Belgium/GO Lyceum Gent) and Mo Bocher (Powell, OH/Univ. of Nebraska HS) each played all 90 minutes.
- Rider played without reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Zaki Alibou (Meknes, Morocco/Meknes) for the ninth time in the last 10 games due to injuries.   

Broncs By The Numbers
- Rider outshot Quinnipiac, 12-11. However, the Bobcats took a 6-5 edge in shots on goal and the Broncs didn't put a shot on target over the game's final 65-plus minutes.
- Al Masude led the Broncs with five shots, including four on target.
- Dulck and Cidolit had two shots apiece.
- Babacar Diene (Thies, Senegal/CEM Ballabey) put his lone shot on target.
- Momo Diop (Thies, Senegal/Prive Serigne Touba) and Dylan Kotch (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) also took one shot each in the game.
- Rider took five corner kicks to the Bobcats' three.
- The Broncs were shown five yellow cards to the Bobcats' one.
