Men's Soccer Earns Point on the Road at Niagara

Diene, Araujo score equalizers

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Babacar Diene (Thies, Senegal/CEM Ballabey) and Matt Araujo (Fords, NJ/Saint Joseph) each scored equalizers as the Rider University men's soccer team earned a 2-2 tie at Niagara Saturday afternoon. With the tie, the Broncs move to 2-7-3 (1-2-2 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles are now 4-6-3 (3-0-2 MAAC).

Niagara scored first on a Nuukele Gboe strike in the 8th minute. The Broncs were dispossessed in their defensive third before Gboe struck inside the right post for the 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, Diene had the answer, taking Araujo's throw in before weaving through defenders into space and shooting across the mouth of goal and inside the right post to equalize.

Still 1-1 at the half, Niagara retook the lead in the 71st minute on a Gabriel Mikina header off a Stephen Haase corner kick. The Broncs were again equal to the task, connecting passes through the midfield and into the box, before Araujo finished from 10 yards out inside the right post. Regis Dulck (Strasbourg, France/Univ. of Strasbourg) played the ball to the left sideline for Jack McGeechan (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional), whose volley to the top of the 18-yard box found Lenny Cidolit's (Montpellier, France/Montpellier Univ.) head. Cidolit headed it into the box, where Araujo hit it on one touch past Niagara goalkeeper Josh Savoni.
