LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Makenzie Rodrigues (Seattle, WA/Forest Ridge) scored the equalizer in the 48
th minute and assisted on freshman
Hannah Freeman's (Lowville, NY/Lowville) game winner in the 68
th minute as the fourth-seeded Rider University women's soccer team came back from down 1-0 at the half to defeat fifth-seeded Manhattan, 2-1, in Friday's MAAC Championship Quarterfinals on Ben Cohen Field. With the win, the Broncs (4-1-2) advance to face top-seeded Siena in Loudonville on Monday. Manhattan ends its season at 3-3-0.
The Jaspers scored in the 13
th minute, with Bri Deleo collecting a ball headed out by a Rider back, before dribbling into the left side of the box and sending a shot into the right side netting.
Still 1-0 Manhattan at the half, Rodrigues wasted little time equalizing in the second half. Less than three minutes into the period,
Cameron Santers (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) played Rodrigues into the box, where the sophomore sent it on one touch with her left foot inside the near, left post. Less than 20 minutes later, Rodrigues played the ball from inside the box back to the top of the 18 to
Hailey Russell (Riverside, NJ/Riverside). Russell then played it to Freeman who connected on a left-footed strike inside the right post.
Quotes & Notes
"It was just a good performance. They came out and made it really hard in the first half. Tactically, what they did was tough for us. We haven't seen someone do that, so we needed to adjust to that. And I think we did in the second half. So, it was good to see us compete and adjust to what they did."
"We've been in the playoffs every year for a long time, but we've faulted at this game for four years. So, it's great for this group now to move on and play in the semifinals. We had that period where we played in the semifinals every year for three years and it was kind of expected. Good to get on the road, stay in a hotel – that's an experience none of us have had for a year and a half – so we're looking forward to it."
