LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Junior
Julia Divorra (Terrassa, Spain/Vedruna Vall) scored twice and added a pair of assists as the Rider University field hockey team dominated Wagner, 6-0, on Senior Day Thursday afternoon on Ben Cohen Field. With the win, the Broncs take a commanding lead in the Northeast Conference standings at 4-0, while the Seahawks dipped to 3-2 in league play.
Divorra opened the scoring at the 8:05 mark, dribbling past her defender for a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper before finishing. Just over three minutes later, the Broncs were awarded a penalty stroke that
Brittany Romanczuk (Washington, NJ/Notre Dame) converted for the 2-0 lead. Divorra and
Sierra Giuliano (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) were credited with assists on
Tess van Ommeren's (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Sint Nicolaas Lyceum) goal that deflected in off a corner opportunity almost four minutes into the second quarter.
The Broncs kept their foot on the gas in the second half, with Divorra scoring nearly seven minutes into the third quarter. The junior then set up Romanczuk's second goal with a cross just over three minutes into the fourth quarter, before
Kaitlyn Flemming (Bellmawr, NJ/Triton Regional) capped the scoring on a stroke near the midway point of the fourth.
Quotes & Notes
"It was a good way to celebrate Senior Day, with a 5-0 victory. We got everybody in the game and everybody participated and in a really good win for us. We're just trying to take one game at a time. We love the fact that the defense is hanging so tough. We haven't been scored on – knock on wood. And hopefully we're going to continue that trend. We got our attack going a little bit better than we did last game, so it was good to see that. And scoring came all over the field." –
Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong
-
Kaitlyn Tomas (Campbellville, Ontario/Appleby College) moved to 4-0 with the victory in the cage and has yet to allow a goal this season. She made one save.
- Rider sits alone in first place in the NEC at 4-0. The Broncs handed LIU (3-1) its lone loss, while every other team in the league has at least two losses in conference. With a win in either of its final two games – Monday at Bryant or Thursday at Sacred Heart – Rider would clinch the top seed and host the NEC Championship Game.
- Prior to the game, Rider honored its four seniors – Romanczuk, Flemming,
Gillian Gunn (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) and
Emily Quintus (Drexel Hill, PA/Cardinal O'Hara).
