Wrestling Falls at Binghamton, 27-21, in Season Opener

Dellavecchia, Garcia and Laird post bonus points in victories

VESTAL, NY Jesse Dellavecchia (Great River, NY/East Islip [Binghamton]), Angel Garcia (Philadelphia, PA/Mariana Bracetti Academy) and Ethan Laird (Waterford, PA/General McLane) each earned bonus points in their wins, but the Rider University wrestling team fell in its season opener at Binghamton, 27-20, Saturday evening. The Bearcats begin the season at 1-0, while the Broncs fall to 0-1.

The Bearcats built an 18-0 lead with falls at 125 and 133 and a pair of decisions at 141 and 149. Dellavecchia got the Broncs on the board with a fall at 2:39 against Alex Strashinsky at 157 lbs., and after a Binghamton decision at 165, the freshman Garcia emphatically announced his presence on the collegiate scene with a fall against Alex Melikian in 59 seconds to cut the deficit to 21-12.

Binghamton's nationally-ranked No. 4 Lou DePrez responded with a fall against George Walton (Franklin, NJ/Bound Brook) at 184 lbs. to put the Bearcats on top, 27-12. The Broncs finished the match strong with Matt Correnti's (Delran, NJ/Holy Cross Academy) 7-4 decision over Sam DePrez at 197 lbs. and Laird's tech fall against Collin Burns at 285 lbs.
 
Notes
- Dellavecchia was competing against his former team. The Broncs graduate student wrestled his freshman year at Binghamton, posting a 15-9 record.
- Garcia, Correnti, McKenzie Bell (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway) and Jake Silverstein (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown [Nebraska]) were making their Rider debuts.
- Rider faced Binghamton for the first time since Dec. 7, 2013, when the two schools were Colonial Athletic Association foes.
- Laird wrestled at 285 lbs. for the first time as a Bronc, following three years at 197 lbs.
- The Broncs return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Clarion, PA, to take on the Ohio at noon and the host Golden Eagles at 2 p.m. in a pair of Mid-American Conference duals.
