LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Former Rider Baseball standout Nick Margevicius has made the opening day roster of the Seattle Mariners, the team today announced. Margevicius made his Major League debut in March 2019, making the opening day roster of the San Diego Padres, who drafted him in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
Margevicius made 17 appearances, including 12 starts, in his first Major League campaign for the Padres. Following the season, he was designated for assignment by the Padres and claimed off waivers by the Mariners in January. He was the 64th Bronc to be selected in the MLB Draft and the seventh former Rider University baseball player to appear in Major League Baseball. At the time of his debut, he was just the second player to reach the majors in his draft class (Kyle Wright, Atlanta Braves).
Margevicius, a 6-foot-5 lefthanded pitcher, twice earned postseason accolades from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in his three years at Rider, taking First Team All-MAAC as a junior after landing on the Second Team as a sophomore. In his junior seasons of 2017, the southpaw went 6-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 87.1 innings of work. Margevicius struck out 79 hitters and had a WHIP of 1.24 in 14 appearances (13 starts). He led the team in wins, innings pitched, WHIP, ERA, strikeouts, complete games, quality starts and strikeout-to-walk ratios (3.5-to-1). Margevicius went six or more innings in 11 of his 13 starts in 2017 and he had eight quality starts.
