SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Nick Shuhet delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh to lead Rider past Seton Hall, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon. The Broncs improve to 20-11 (14-4 MAAC), the Seton Hall falls to 11-17 (0-6 Big East).
Seton Hall struck first, capitalizing on a Rider error to take a 1-0 lead early.
Rider responded in the fourth, beginning with a leadoff single from
Erich Hartmann. After moving into scoring position on a passed ball, Hartmann came home on
Anthony Paskell's sacrifice fly following a
Nick Shuhet base hit that put runners on the corners, evening the score at 1-1.
The Pirates answered in the bottom half of the inning, pushing across a run to reclaim a 2-1 advantage.
Seton Hall threatened to extend its lead in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs, but the Broncs' pitching and defense held firm, escaping the jam to keep the deficit at one.
Rider broke through in the seventh.
AJ Labrusciano worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Austin Cannon. With two outs, Hartmann delivered a clutch single down the left field line to put runners on the corners. Shuhet followed with the biggest hit of the day, ripping a two-run double to right field to give Rider a 3-2 lead.
The Pirates mounted another threat in the eighth, putting a runner on third with no outs after a bunt and an error. However, Hartmann came up big defensively, fielding a shallow fly ball and firing home to Shuhet for a double play that erased the scoring chance.
Seton Hall put the tying run on base in the ninth, but Rider shut the door to secure the 3-2 victory.
Quotes and Notes
"Erich's throw at the plate was a big moment for us, no outs and a runner on third, and we were able to turn it into two outs. I thought we pitched well overall, got a clutch hit from Shuhet, and did just enough to come away with the win while working out of a few tough spot."
