POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Redshirt junior wing
Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Callaway/The Masters School) posted a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds and scored the 1,000
th point of his Broncs career as the Rider University men's basketball team defeated Marist, 69-52, Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. With the win, the Broncs snap a two-game losing skid and improve to 9-6 (3-2 MAAC). The Red Foxes fall to 2-12 (1-4 MAAC).
Rider scored the game's first nine points on three-pointers, the first from Vaughn and the next two from
Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API). Cold shooting both ways left the door open for Marist, which gradually whittled away until taking its first lead, 16-15, on a Braden Bell three-pointer at the 5:21 mark. The lead changed hands twice in the final three-plus minutes of the period, before
Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson's (Lansdowne, PA/Monsignor Bonner) lay-up tied the game, 24-24, heading to the locker room at halftime.
Marist scored the first six points of the second half on three-pointers from Matt Herasme and Tyler Sagle, before the Broncs got their footing. Vaughn responded with a bucket and
Christian Ings (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) also got inside for two, sparking an 11-0 Rider run. Vaughn's dunk at the 16:01 mark tied the game and his three 30 seconds later gave the Broncs the lead for good. Rider put together another 11-0 run to extend the lead to double-digits with less than nine minutes to play and the advantage continued to swell to as many as 21 on a Jordan three-pointer with 44 seconds remaining.
Quotes & Notes
"I thought Chris Ings really gave us a spark when Stevie went down. I thought Chris really led our team. He did a really good job finding guys out of the blitz of the ball screens, making the extra passes, driving it downhill, playing unlike a freshman. And we shared the ball more. I don't know how many assists we had, but I know it was more than we've had of late. I thought we looked better as a team and we played better as a team."
– Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett
"I had a feeling I was getting close [to 1,000 points], but I wasn't really paying mind do it. I just wanted to get a win today, a team win. So that's what was on my mind."
