LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Rider University women's soccer junior goalkeeper
Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School) and freshman midfielder
Camryn Dees (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington H.S. North) have been named MAAC Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office has announced. Carbonell made a career-high 15 saves and Dees assisted on a goal in the Broncs' 2-0 road shutout at Quinnipiac on Saturday to improve to 1-0-1 in league play.
Carbonell earns the award for the second time this season after posting a pair of shutouts in the leadup to the Sept. 2 honor. Her third clean sheet came on Saturday at Quinnipiac, when she made nine of her career-high 15 stops in the second half to preserve the lead. She's now posted a 1.14 goals-against average and an .823 saves percentage on the year, while her eight career shutouts and 15 wins both rank fifth in program history.
Dees becomes the third different Rider freshman to earn MAAC Rookie of the Week this year, joining
Hailey Russell (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) and
Makenzie Rodrigues (Seattle, WA/Forest Ridge). Dees started the play that put the Broncs up 2-0 in the 85
th minute at Quinnipiac, playing
Kaitlyn Siciliano (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) into the right corner before
Sofia Soares (Sao Paolo, Brazil/St. Nicholas) headed in Siciliano's cross in front for the two-goal lead. The assist was her third of the year, joining
Valeria Pascuet (Bunuel, Navarra, Spain/San Fermin Ikastola) and
Niamh Cashin (Nottingham, England/All Saints Academy) for the team lead.
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they play host to Niagara. Kickoff on ESPN+ is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
