Field Hockey Bests Villanova, 4-3, in Overtime on Sunday

Senior Jade Freeberg forced overtime with a goal as time expired in regulation

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA – Sophomore forward Carly Brosious (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner/Archbishop Prendergast) scored the game-winning goal to give the Rider University field hockey team a 4-3 overtime victory at Villanova on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Broncs (4-2) won their second game in a row, while the Wildcats (3-3) dropped their second consecutive contest.
 
The last minute of regulation saw fireworks from both sides.
 
With the game tied at two, the hosts took a 3-2 edge with just over thirty seconds left in regulation.
 
Rider would then earn a penalty corner on the ensuing possession. With time expired, Bronc senior Jade Freeberg (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) would find the back of the cage to force overtime.
 
In the first extra period, Brosious potted her second game-winning strike of the season to give the Broncs the win.
 
In the cage for Rider, junior Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) made a season-high 10 saves in a winning effort.

- The Broncs snapped a two-game losing streak against Villanova with the win.
- The last five games between Rider and the Wildcats have been decided by one goal.
- Rider is 2-0 in overtime games this season.
- Four of Rider's six games have been decided by one goal this year.
- Villanova took 21 penalty corners in the game compared to just six for Rider.
 
BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Julia Divorra opened the scoring for the Broncs. She registered her team-leading sixth marker of the season. Divorra has scored in four of the team's last five games.
- Brosious also had an assist on Divorra's strike. It was her team-leading fifth assist of the season. She has now tied her career-high in assists.
- Tess Coorens scored the second Rider goal of the day. It was her second straight game with a marker.
- Freeberg's goal was her first of the season.

UP NEXT
Rider returns to action on Friday, September 27, with a road non-conference contest against Towson that is slated to begin at 3:00 pm. The Broncs have won six straight games against the Tigers and Rider leads the all-time series, 18-4.
