PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rider University baseball team saw a ninth-inning rally fall just short in a 5-4 setback on the road against in-state rival Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Bainton Field.
The Broncs (13-31) scored four runs on five hits in their final at-bat, but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet Knights (18-24) held on to snap a two-game losing streak versus Rider.
Trailing, 5-0, in the top of the ninth, the guests got on the board with an RBI single through the left side by
Jack Peterson (Pittstown, NJ/North Hunterdon). Juniors
Joe Simone (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and
Kyle Johnson (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) followed with singles to make it a 5-2 game with one out.
Following a pitching change,
Zach Fick (South Elgin, IL/St. Charles North) walked with the bases loaded to pull the Broncs within two at 5-3. After a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to just one run, Rutgers escaped as
David Bermudez (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) flew out to end the game.
On the mound for the guests, senior
Anthony Arneth (Pine Beach, NJ/Central Regional) was saddled with the loss. Arneth worked a season-best four and a third innings. He surrendered three earned runs and struck out three Rutgers hitters without issuing a walk.
