JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rider University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to hOURglass rival Saint Peter's, 2-1, in double overtime on the road Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 4-4-1 (1-1-1 MAAC), while the Peacocks are now 5-5-0 (2-1-0 MAAC).
The Broncs took a 1-0 lead in the 32
nd minute as
Matt Araujo (Fords, NJ/Saint Joseph) beat his defender near the top, right corner of the 18-yard box before playing a short thru ball to
Mathis Catanzaro (Montpellier, France/MHSC), who struck past Saint Peter's goalkeeper Herman Wulff to the right upper 90.
The Broncs maintained the lead until the 81
st minute, when the ball knocked around inside the 18-yard box and the Peacocks' Alex Garcia was able to shoot through traffic and past Rider goalkeeper
Pablo Gatinois (Madrid, Spain/Lycee Francais de Madrid).
With six seconds left in the second overtime, a failed Rider clearance and contact near the top of the 18-yard box drew a penalty kick for the Peacocks. Jordan Jowers went low, left to beat Gatinois with the golden goal.
