Men's Soccer Plays Monmouth to 2-2 Draw

DeCastro, Gomez Olano Score for Broncs

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJPablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain/Universidad de Vitoria) and Francisco Gomez Olano (Cadiz, Spain/University of Cadiz) each scored goals as the Rider University men's soccer team played Monmouth to a 2-2 draw Saturday night on Ben Cohen Field. With the tie, the Broncs move to 4-4-2 (1-1-2 MAAC), while the Hawks are now 1-8-2 (1-2-1 MAAC).

The Broncs took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, as DeCastro headed in a Mathis Catanzaro (Montpellier, France/MHSC) free kick. Just under nine minutes later, Ben Zakowski tied the game for Monmouth, intercepting a Rider attempt to clear the ball inside the box before beating Pablo Gatinois (Madrid, Spain/Lycee Francais de Madrid) one-on-one inside the left post to tie the score.

The Broncs retook the lead in the 55th minute, as Gomez Olano collected a Matt Araujo (Fords, NJ/Saint Joseph) pass near the top of the 18-yard box, evaded his defender to get inside the box and shot past another defender and Monmouth goalkeeper Sean Murray inside the right post. But Monmouth again had an answer less than three minutes later, with Santo Arena finishing from just outside of the 18-yard box into the left upper 90 off a Julian Gomez feed.

Quotes and Notes
"It's the second game that we definitely played well enough to win, but we keep giving away bad goals. We could blame a lot of things – we could look for excuses with the officials, this and that. We were pretty unlucky with not putting away chances. A couple of crossbars, maybe three, a couple of good keeper saves. But in the end, we still have to own it that we have to do better. We still have a good team. We have a lot of key guys injured. But we can't use that as an excuse. We have to move on and get a win on Wednesday." – Rider Head Coach Charlie Inverso

- Rider had won the last two against Monmouth, which now holds a 16-9-4 edge in the all-time series.
- The Broncs had two shots within 54 seconds of each other clang off the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
- Rider played without All-MAAC center back Sylvain Coco (Nimes, France/University of Montpellier) due to injury, while leader scoring Clement Bourret (Orleans, France/Lycee Jean Giraudoux) played just six minutes.
- The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they play host to Manhattan. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
