Field Hockey Tops Lock Haven in Penalty Shootout

Sophomore goalkeeper Lena Vandam made 12 saves in the cage for Rider

LOCK HAVEN, PA – The Rider University field hockey team took down host Lock Haven, 1-0, in a penalty shootout on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Charlotte Smith Field.

The Broncs (5-5) have now won three consecutive road contests, while the Bald Eagles (6-5) dropped their second straight home tilt.

The two teams played ninety minutes of scoreless action followed by seven rounds in the penalty shootout.

Rider sophomore Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) was stellar in the cage for the guests. She made a season-high 12 saves en route to her fourth shutout of the fall.

As the shootout went to a sixth round, neither team could convert with the win on the line. Shooting first in the seventh round, Rider was awarded a stroke and the Broncs converted. Lock Haven did not score on its final attempt, as Rider squeaked out the road-win.

Junior Tess Coorens (Leiden, Netherlands/Visser'T Hooft Lyceum) opened the penalty shootout with a goal. Following that, the Broncs missed their next four attempts. On the opposite side, the Bald Eagles missed their first four attempts in the penalty shootout.

Coorens eventually gave Rider the win by converting a stroke attempt.
