RICHMOND, VA – Freshman
Carly Brosious (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner/Archbishop Prendergast) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Rider University field hockey team past host VCU, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Cary Street Field. Â
The Broncs (6-5) have now won four consecutive road contests, while the Rams (6-5) dropped their second straight tilt.
Rider sophomore
Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) was stellar in the cage for the guests for the second game in a row. She made a career-high 15Â saves en route to her sixth victory of the season and the 14th of her career.
VCU opened the scoring late in the first half as Maite Sturm finished a rebound in front of Vandam. The strike came in 27th minute and the Rams would take a 1-0 edge into halftime.
Freshman
Tess van Ommeren (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Sint Nicolaas Lyceum) helped the Broncs tie the game at one in the 49th minute as her shot was deflected past the VCU netminder by freshman
Gianna Morganti (Berlin, NJ/St. Joseph High School). Off a penalty corner, Morganti found the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal.
Down the stretch in regulation, neither team was able to break through. With time winding down, the Rider defense held their ground as the Rams were awarded a penalty corner to close out the second half.
In overtime, Brosious potted her team-leading third game-winning goal of the year. Brosious had possession of the ball at the top of the circle with her back to the keeper, she turned and fired a shot that clanked off the cage to give the guests the win. Â
NOTES & QUOTES
"Once again, Lena was outstanding in goal and she kept us in the game today. Our defense came up big in some very critical moments and our offense took advantage of the few opportunities we had.
Tess Coorens played great defense against their top goal-scorer. She had several clutch tackles for us."
– Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong
"
Kaitlyn Flemming and
Tess van Ommeren did a beautiful job setting up Carly's overtime goal. We are very proud of our team's effort today. We needed everyone digging down together to get it done."
