Lawrenceville, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team fell to visiting Monmouth, 2-1, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Friday night under the lights at Ben Cohen Field.
The Broncs (4-5, 0-1 MAAC) have now dropped back-to-back one-goal contests at home, while the Hawks (6-5, 1-0 MAAC) won their fourth tilt in a row.
With the score tied at one and under three minutes remaining in regulation, Monmouth's Georgia Garden Bachop went coast-to-coast and fired a shot past a sliding
Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium)Â in goal for the Broncs.
Bachop's tally was her second of the contest and proved to be the game-winner as Monmouth's backline held their ground down the stretch.
As time expired, the Broncs earned a penalty corner. Rider junior
Tess Coorens (Leiden, Netherlands/Visser'T Hooft Lyceum) played the ball to freshman
Kat Conroy (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) who saw her game-tying bid turned aside by Monmouth netminder Kate O'Hogan.
Conroy opened the scoring in the game with her second tally of the autumn. In the 16th minute, Conroy finished a pass from senior
Jessica Randazzo (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) in an open cage to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
The lead was short lived as Garden Bachop knotted it at one with her first marker of the day in the 19th minute off a penalty corner. Â
In goal for the Broncs, Vandam turned made six saves in a losing effort.
NOTES & QUOTES
"I think we gave a good effort out there on the field. Monmouth was really a skilled team and determined. Monmouth played more tenaciously than we did tonight, especially in the second half. We just could not generate any attack over the final 35 minutes."
– Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong
"Anytime a game is tied at one at halftime the team who wants it the most is going to win the game. Monmouth certainly showed that they wanted it. They attacked the ball with speed and confidence were we played a little bit shy and intimidated."
