NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Niagara came away with a 7-0 victory in a competitive MAAC match against the Rider University men's tennis team Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 0-13 (0-6 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles are now 5-17 (3-4 MAAC).
Once again playing with just five players, the Broncs fell in a pair of close doubles matches.
Lysander Payano Almonte (New Brunswick, NJ/Colegio Quusquey/Rockland C.C.) and
Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) fell to Taylan Ozdemir and Josh Wilson, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 1, while
Diego Delgado (Lara, Venezuela/Colegio Rioclaro) and
Javier Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) fell to Brent Boleslav and Jason Wisely, 6-4, at No. 2.
In singles, Delgado, Clark and Melendez all played very close first sets, but all three fell. Melendez fell to Wilson, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, while Delgado was defeated by Boleslav, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 3. Clark was defeated by Shyam Srinivasan, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 4. The Purple Eagles also took straight-sets victories at Nos. 1 and 5, while winning No. 6 by default.
The Broncs close out the season with an hOURglass rivalry match at Saint Peter's at 6 p.m.
