LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Monmouth defeated the Rider University men's tennis team, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 0-12 (0-5 MAAC), while the Hawks sit atop the league at 11-13 (5-0 MAAC).
Playing with just five players, the Broncs started the match down a point and up against it in doubles, having to win both remaining matches in order to avoid a 2-0 deficit. The Hawks cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the 2-0 match lead and took No. 1 doubles by a 6-2 score.
In singles,
Lysander Payano Almonte (New Brunswick, NJ/Colegio Quusquey/Rockland C.C.) came closest to taking a set, falling 6-3 in the first to Nicola Pipoli at No. 1.
Javier Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) and
Diego Delgado (Lara, Venezuela/Colegio Rioclaro) each took a pair of games in their second sets at Nos. 2 and 4, but the Hawks won the remaining sets by 6-0 scores.
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they travel to Niagara. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
