LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Danielle Scrudato (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) won her No. 5 singles match, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Saint Peter's, 6-1, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-14, while the Hawks are now 4-14.
Saint Joseph's swept the doubles point with wins at all three flights. The Broncs came closest to a win at No. 3, with Scrudato and
Montana Morris (Horsham, PA/Hatsboro-Horsham) falling to Katherine Devlin and Iswarya Vel, 7-5.
In singles, Scrudato defeated Madeline Hill, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. But the Hawks came away with the remaining five singles flights to account for the final 6-1 margin.
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) battled at No. 1, but fell to Maureen Devlin, 7-5, 6-1.
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) also played a highly-competitive match at No. 2, but fell to Laura Gomez, 6-3, 6-4.
"Great matches today," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "We came out playing aggressive at the net in doubles and steadier at the baselines in singles."
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they play host to La Salle. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
