LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) won at the top singles and doubles flights, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to St. Francis Brooklyn, 5-2, Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-13, while the Terriers are now 4-11.
"We came very close to pulling this out," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "It came down to the last two matches with Caitlin and Amanda."
The Broncs started the match well, winning the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Canda paired with
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) to defeat Andrea Rojo and Runsi Patro, 6-4, while
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and
Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) also earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Laura Dimante and Sara Stankovic.
Canda completed her double victory with a 6-4, 6-2, decision over Dimante. But the Terriers would take the remaining five singles flights to account for the 5-2 St. Francis win. Two of the Rider setbacks came in three sets.
Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) lost a heartbreaker to Rojo, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6. Meanwhile, Binder was defeated by Jean-na Koo, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they play host to Saint Joseph's. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
