EWING, NJ –
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and
Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) won at No. 3 doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team opened the spring season with an 8-1 setback to The College of New Jersey Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-8 on the season, while the Lions improve to 6-0.
"We played well for our first match of the season," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "Points and games were close, but we need to be able to close games. Too many unforced errors."
Binder and Jeffrey earned an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. But the Lions took the remaining two doubles flights to establish a 2-1 lead.
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academy) and
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) fell to Grace Minassian and Maddy Stoner, 8-4, at No. 1, while
Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) and
Danielle Scrudato (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) were defeated by Alyssa Baldi and Sneha Rangu, 8-2, at No. 2.
The Lions went on to sweep all six singles flights to clean up the 8-1 victory. Jeffrey was very competitive at No. 6, but fell to Audrey Chen, 8-7 (7-1). The remaining five matches were all won in straight sets.
