Volleyball Knocks Off Iona on Senior Day

Seniors Savannah Logan & Hailey Riede both set new career-highs in kills

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – In their final home collegiate contest, seniors Hailey Riede (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley-Demarest) and Savannah Logan (Jupiter, FL/Benjamin) combined for 41 kills to lead the Rider University volleyball team past visiting Iona, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action inside Alumni Gymnasium.

The Broncs (16-9, 11-5 MAAC) won their eighth straight match, while the Gaels (16-7, 14-2 MAAC) saw their 12-game MAAC winning streak come to an end. Rider won by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 25-13, 23-25 and 18-16 to earn their seventh MAAC victory in a row.

Riede and Logan along with classmate Perry Williams (Portland, OR/Cleveland) made the most of their final game inside Alumni Gymnasium. Williams and freshman Anilee Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) came up big at the net in the fifth set. The pair teamed for a block assist to give Rider a 15-14 edge in the decisive frame. Later, the Broncs would seal the victory after a Gael attack error.

Riede had arguably her best match of the season, recording a career-high 22 kills thanks to registering a .409 attack percentage. Logan also set a new career-best with 19 kills. Junior Alexa Shello (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) was the other Bronc with 10 or more kills as she added 11 off the bench for the hosts.

In the middle, Sher was solid on both sides of the ball as she recorded her second straight double-double. She dished out 51 assists to go along with 18 digs, three service aces, one kill and four block assists.

At the net, Williams had five kills, one solo block and five block assists.  

On the defensive end, junior libero Rachelle Runyon (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) had another strong match for the Broncs with a match-high 31 digs. Sophomore Danielle Blanco (El Paso, TX/Franklin) added 15 digs and classmate Brynn Sherbert (Temecula, CA/Great Oak) registered 11 digs of her own.

- Rider had 84 points, 63 kills, 59 assists, 10 service aces, 11 total blocks and 91 digs.
- Rider and Iona split the regular-season series. The Broncs have won five of the last six meetings between the two teams. Both contests this fall went to five sets.
- Rider has now won 10 or more MAAC games for the fifth year in a row.
- The Broncs had 10 or more kills in all five sets. Rider had 16 kills and a whopping .600 team attack percentage in the first frame.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Runyon had 10 or more digs for the 23rd straight match. It was her ninth match with 20 or more digs this season. She has registered 20 or more digs in five of her last six appearances. It was her second match this fall with over 30 digs. Both of those matches came against Iona. She is one of just liberos in the MAAC to have 30 or more digs twice this year.     
- On Tuesday, Runyon was named the MAAC Libero of the Week and Anilee Sher was tabbed as the MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week.
- Riede had 10 or more kills for the 15th match this autumn. She did so for the seventh time in her last eight matches.
- It was Logan's seventh MAAC match with 10 or more kills.
- Sher had over 50 assists for the fourth time this season. Sunday marked her team-best 16th double-double. Her 18 digs were a new career-high.

UP NEXT
Rider returns to action on Wednesday, November 7, with a road conference clash against Manhattan that is slated to begin at 7:00 pm inside Draddy Gymasium. The Broncs are looking to complete to regular-season sweep of the Jaspers after topping Manhattan, 3-1, this past Saturday.
