LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's swimming and diving team opened the 2018-19 season with a 163-137 dual-match victory against visiting Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon at Coppola Pool on campus.
The Broncs (1-0) avenged a dual-match setback to the Pirates (0-1) last season.
It was a record-setting day in the pool for Rider junior
Justin Carey (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove). He set a new pool record thanks to finishing first in the 100 back with a time of 48.96. Carey also won the 200 back with a time of 1:51.15 and he also finished first in the 100 fly with a mark of 49.45.
In both the 200 back and 100 fly, the Broncs had the top-three finishers. Coming in behind Carey in the 200 back were
Lucas Musselman (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) in second at 1:54.11 and
Carter Paules (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) in third with a time of 1:56.77. In the 100 fly,
Jack Ruggieri (Bellmawr, NJ/Gloucester) landed in second-place with a time of 51.38 and
Daniel Bonge (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) was third at 51.56.
Musselman also had a strong day for the Broncs adding a win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.90.
Vincent Gibbons (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) got his year off to a strong start with second-place finishes in both the 50 free and the 100 free. In the 50 free, he posted a time of 21.23, while finishing the 100 free at 46.94.
Freshman
Kyle Iorizzo (Norwood, NJ/Old Tappan Regional) made an impressive debut for the Broncs, winning the 1,000 free with a time of 9:56.62.
The divers were dominant for the Broncs in their two events. The Rider competitors finished first, second and third in both the 1M and 3M. Sophomore
Dillon Walles (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands High School) won the 3M with a score of 306.90, while senior
Joseph Warker (Reading, PA/Wilson) landed in second and sophomore Patrick Rollefson (Paron, AR/Pulaski Academy) finished in third. In the 1M, Warker won with a mark of 283.20, while Walles and Rollefson ended up in second and third, respectively.
BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Warker had a score of 263.35 in the 3M.
- Rollefson posted a mark of 213.75 in the 3M and 239.17 in the 1M.
- Walles had a score of 277.12 in the 1M.

Griffin Hutton finished in the second-place in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:57.47.

Lucas Musselman came in second in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.51.

Carter Paules was second in the 100 breast at 59.61.

David Cooper ended up in second-place in the 200 breast at 2:12.50.

Rider returns to action on Saturday, October 20, with a road non-conference dual meet against Lehigh that is slated to get underway at noon. Last year, the Broncs took down the Mountain Hawks, 185-105, in Lawrenceville.
