Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Coorens and van Ommeren Each Score Twice as Field Hockey Beats LIU Brooklyn

The Broncs improved to 1-1 in MAAC play this season

BROOKLYN, NY – Freshman Tess van Ommeren (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Sint Nicolaas Lyceum) and junior Tess Coorens (Leiden, Netherlands/Visser'T Hooft Lyceum) each scored two goals apiece to lead the Rider University field hockey team past LIU Brooklyn, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action.

The Broncs (7-5, 1-1 MAAC) have now won five consecutive road contests, while the Blackbirds (2-11, 0-2 MAAC) dropped their third straight tilt.

Rider got off to a quick start on the road, scoring two goals in the first 14 minutes of play. Freshman Carly Brosious (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner/Archbishop Pendergast) opened the scoring for the Broncs with her seventh marker of the year and just over a minute later Coorens potted her first strike of the day off a penalty corner.

The Blackbirds would answer and the cut the deficit in half at 2-1, but Rider would take a 3-1 lead into halftime as Coorens once again scored off a penalty corner this time in the 34th minute.

In the second half, Rider pulled away as van Ommeren scored twice. Her first marker came on a chip in the 58 minute and she would later cap the scoring with a tally off a rebound.

Bronc sophomore Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) was steady in the cage for the guests. Vandam turned aside four shots to earn her seventh victory of the fall.

NOTES & QUOTES
"Our kids gutted out another win today. We realize that every conference game is precious in moving one step closer to securing a playoff berth. In league games there is little room for error. We were happy to see our offense generate some scoring today, but we needed to play better defending our circle. We needed to do a better job limiting the number of times we let LIU into our circle." – Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong

"Overall we are happy with the win. We are going to enjoy today's win and then turn our focus to Fairfield." – Hussong
