LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Freshman forward
Carly Brosious (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner/Archbishop Prendergast) scored two goals to propel the Rider University field hockey team past visiting Fairfield, 2-1, in overtime on Friday evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. Â
The Broncs (8-5, 2-1 MAAC) have now won four consecutive games, while the Stags (10-4, 2-1 MAAC) have dropped three of their last four contests.
Sophomore
Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) was stellar in the cage once again for Rider. The second-year netminder made 13 saves, highlighted by stopping seven shots in the overtime periods.
The game changed in an instant as Vandam made a sliding save on one of the field which lead to an odd-man rush for the Broncs.
Following Vandam's pad save, Bronc freshman
Tess van Ommeren (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Sint Nicolaas Lyceum) played the ball up to Brosious. After Brosious beat the Stag marking her, she went in uncontested on Fairfield goalkeeper Zoe Rosen. Brosious made a good move and found the back of the cage for second strike of the game and her ninth of the season in the 87th minute.
Brosious opened the scoring in sixth minute. She won the ball just inside the circle and fired the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the cage. Â
NOTES & QUOTES
"Fairfield was controlling us a little in the second half. I think we really hung tough and leaned on Lena a lot tonight to come up with some big plays and keep us in the game. Every time Lena made a big play tonight it inspired someone on the field to do something a little extra and eventually it led to the game-winning goal. Anytime Lena is on the top of her game like she was tonight we know we have a very good chance to be successful. Her play, motivation and communication to her teammates is outstanding. She's at the top of her game right now."
– Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong
"Carly is getting better and better every day. She is someone that we lean on a lot offensively. For a freshman to handle the pressure situations the way she has, has been a great thing for us."
