LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Freshman
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Delaware State, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon. The loss snaps the Broncs' (3-2) three-match winning streak. The Hornets are now 1-2.
Despite playing with just five players, the Broncs took the doubles point with 6-3 wins at both No. 1 and No. 2. Garcia paired with
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) to defeat Sophia Rachi and Cassandra Boltman at No. 1, while
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) got past Yelyzaveta Bessonova and Alina Polyvana by the same score.
Garcia then defeated Polyvana, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. But the Hornets took the remaining five singles matches and the 5-2 victory. Canda took a set at No. 2, but fell in three sets to Rachi. Melendez also played a highly-competitive match, but fell to Boltman at the top flight, 6-4, 6-3.
The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they play travel to Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
