EASTON, PA – Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team was defeated, 5-1, at Lafayette Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs even their record at 1-1, while the Leopards won their season opener and move to 1-0.
 
"We came very close to winning this match," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "The match was decided on the tie-breakers."
 
Binder paired with Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) to defeat Katie Hill and Meredith Block, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. But the Leopards took No. 1 doubles by a 6-3 score and No. 3 in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).
 
Binder went on to win her No. 3 singles match against Block in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. However the Leopards won four of the remaining five sets, while the fifth did not finish. Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) battled back after dropping the first set, 7-5, to win the second, 6-4. But Cecilia Lesnick won the match in the third set, 10-6.
 
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they travel to Monmouth. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
