Lawrenceville, NJ – Freshman
Kaitlyn Flemming (Bellmawr, NJ/Triton Regional High School) scored two goals to lead the Rider University field hockey team past visiting Towson, 4-0, on Friday evening in non-conference action at Ben Cohen Field.
The Broncs (3-3) snapped their three-game losing streak and scored their second shutout win of the fall, while the Tigers (0-7) suffered their seventh straight setback. Â
Rider opened the scoring 12 and a half minutes into play as freshman
Marion Waterkeyn (Antwerp, Belgium/OLVE) scored her second career goal off a feed from senior
Allison Baligian (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Waterkeyn buried a rebound into the empty after Baligian fired a shot from the right-side on goal.
The Broncs added to their lead 18 minutes later courtesy of a strike from
Shannon Hughes (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) with freshman
Eline De Jong (Groningen, Netherlands/Praedinius Gymnasium) picking up the helper. The goal was the first of the season for Hughes, while De Jong earned her first career assist.
Late in the first half, Flemming scored off a penalty corner to give the hosts a 3-0 edge heading into halftime.
In the second half, Flemming added an insurance goal and the Broncs held Towson to just one shot.
Freshman
Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) made three saves in the cage for the Broncs to pick up her third career win.
