SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Second half goals from
Arthur Herpreck (Brest, France/West Brittany) and
Pablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain) propelled the Rider University men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Seton Hall Monday night. With the win, the Broncs even their record at 1-1-0, while the Pirates slip to 0-1-1.
Seton Hall opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the first half as Spencer Burkhardt got a head on a long cross into the box from Noah Teperow to beat Rider goalkeeper
David Pastuna (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). But the Broncs were able to fend off several scoring opportunities from the Pirates to hold the deficit at 1-0 after the first half.
In the second half, the Broncs came out firing with five shots in the first 11 minutes, with the fifth being a header by Herpreck to beat Seton Hall goalkeeper Steven Catudal.
Clement Bourret (Orleans, France/Lycee Jean Giraudoux) assisted on the goal. Six and a half minutes later,
Jose Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain) kept a ball alive in the box to set up countryman
Pablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain) for the game-winning finish in the 63
rd minute.
Quotes and Notes
"I think we were in a good flow in the beginning, but it faded away. We just decided at halftime to go after them and try to be more direct in our play and we created a lot of chances."
"We were lucky to get out 1-0 in the first half. Seton Hall had a lot of near misses. But we could've probably put away about five in the second. It was our game in the second half. The guys rolled up their sleeves and got the job done. Give Victor (Kotynski) and the coaching staff credit. They scouted well and they had a good game plan."
– Rider Head Coach Charlie Inverso
- The Broncs are now 4-2-0 against Seton Hall under Inverso, with all six contests being decided by one goal. Rider has defeated the Pirates in each of the last three years.
- DeCastro has now scored a goal in each of his first two games in the Cranberry and White.
- Aguinaga and Bourret each assisted on a goal for the second-straight game.
- Two Broncs made their season debuts – Santiago Castro Garcia (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) started and played the full 90 minutes, while freshman
