Volleyball Falls to Marist in Five-Set Thriller

Red Foxes rally to take down the host Broncs

Lawrenceville, NJ – The Rider University women's volleyball team fell to visiting Marist, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action inside Alumni Gymnasium. The Red Foxes topped the Broncs by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 13-25, 25-18 and 15-5.

Rider (10-10, 4-4 MAAC) saw its four-match winning streak come to an end, while Marist (9-10, 6-2 MAAC) won its third straight conference match.

The Broncs held a 2-1 lead, but Marist rallied to take each of the last two sets to complete a perfect weekend in MAAC action. The Red Foxes scored the first three points and built that to a 9-3 edge. The guests never looked back en route to the win.

Offensively, junior Hailey Riede (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley-Demarest) led the Bronc attack with 16 kills, while senior Jennifer Borio (Ridley Park, PA/Padua Academy) chipped in 12 kills. Junior Savannah Logan (Jupiter, FL/Benjamin) also added nine kills for Rider. In the middle, senior setter Veronica Koval (Allentown, PA/Parkland) had 39 assists, two service aces, one kill and a season-high 17 digs.

Senior tri-captain Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) had a strong game defensively for Rider, registering a team-best 24 digs. Freshman Brynn Sherbert (Temecula, CA/Great Oak) contributed 10 digs, while sophomore Rachelle Runyon (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) registered 12 digs of her own.

Notes & Quotes
"I thought we lost the match in the fourth set," Rider Head Coach Chris Feliciano said. "We played well in the third set and got ahead of ourselves. We told the team not to ge too complacent, but we fell asleep at the wheel."

"We have now approached musti-win matches," Feliciano added. "This one is a bad loss. We put ourselves in a position to win and we did not take advantage of that opportunity. Now we have to go and win some matches on the road, which is not easy in our league."

- Rider had 46 kills, 78 digs and three total blocks.
- The Broncs are 5-2 at home this season and 7-2 in the Garden State in 2017. (Both of the setbacks have been in conference play).
- Rider is now 2-1 in five-set matches this fall (1-1 in conference play).
- The Broncs have won three straight regular season matches against Siena.
- Rider had won their last 10 sets against their opponents before dropping the first set against Marist.
