LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Danielle Scrudato (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) forced a third set at No. 4 singles, but the Rider University women's tennis team was swept by Marist, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon to close out the Fall schedule. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 1-6 (0-4 MAAC), while the Red Foxes are now 1-0 (1-0 MAAC).
Marist swept the doubles point in short order, with wins of 6-2 at No. 1, 6-1 at No. 2 and 6-0 at No. 3. The Broncs were competitive at the top of the singles line-up, with
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) falling to Claire Schmitz, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 and
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) battling Julia Gabay before falling, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1.
Scrudato pushed Amy Galloway to a third set. Galloway took the first, 6-1, before Scrudato won the second set by the same score. Galloway ultimately got past Scrudato in the third, 6-4.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) was also competitive at No. 3, but fell to Sam Galu, 6-1, 6-4. Marist took No. 5 and No. 6, both by 6-0, 6-0, scores to wrap up the sweep.
"I was hoping for better results today, but Marist was stronger than anticipated," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "Danielle played extremely well, hitting her forehand with power. Overall, I see a lot of positive improvements with this team."
