STATEN ISLAND, NY – Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) won her No. 3 singles match, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell at Wagner, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs drop to 1-5, while the Seahawks are now 2-0.  
 
The Broncs were competitive in doubles play, with Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) and Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academy) dropping a tightly-contested match to Samantha Hodges and Fidan Khalilzade, 7-6, at No. 1. Danielle Scrudato (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) and Montana Morris (Horsham, PA/Hatsboro-Horsham) also pushed Melanie Post and Carolyn Gibson at No. 3, but fell, 7-5.
 
Binder defeated Hodges, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, but the Seahawks came away with victories in the remaining five singles flights. Melendez and Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) each won their first set, but their opponent would take the match in three sets. Melendez fell to Khalilzake, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1, while Jeffrey was defeated by Rina Baynes, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.
 
The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they travel to Siena. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
