Field Hockey Bounces Back With Win at Colgate

Freshman Eline De Jong scored the game-winner for the Broncs

Hamilton, NY – Freshman Eline De Jong (Groningen, Netherlands/Praedinius Gymnasium) and senior Shannon Hughes (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) each scored a goal apiece as the Rider University field hockey team blanked Colgate, 2-0, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Tyler's Field.

The Broncs (5-5) won their second straight out of league road game, while the Raiders (2-9) dropped their seventh contest in a row.

Rider struck first, getting on the board just over 13 minutes into the game thanks to a strike from De Jong. The marker was her first since September 9 and her fourth of the autumn.

De Jong's goal was the only score during the first half and proved to be the game-winner as the visitors took a 1-0 edge into halftime.

In the second half, the Broncs got a little breathing room as Hughes scored her second goal of the year. Her unassisted tally came in the 55th minute and was all Rider would need. The Rider backline held its ground and kept the hosts off the board to preserve the clean sheet.

Rider freshman goalkeeper Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) did not face a shot on goal, but posted the shutout for her fifth career victory.
