La Salle Outlasts Field Hockey in Overtime

The Broncs fell, 3-2, to the Explorers at home on Thursday

Lawrenceville, NJ – The visiting La Salle field hockey team outlasted Rider, 3-2, in overtime on Thursday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field in non-conference play.

The Broncs (5-6) dropped their first home game of the season, while the Explorers (7-4) won their second straight road contest versus a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent.

With the score knotted at two in the extra frame, La Salle's Mackenzie Karcher potted the game-winner through traffic in front of the net. The marker was her second of the contest and came with 4:29 left in the first overtime period.

The guests opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Summer Pierson netted her first goal of the season off a penalty corner. The Broncs wasted little time evening it up, as Jade Freeberg (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) got the equalizer 59 seconds later.

The Explorers took a 2-1 edge into the break as Karcher tipped a shot past Rider freshman goalkeeper Lena Vandam (Brasschaat, Belgium) in the 33rd minute.
Rider tied the score at two midway  through the second half courtesy of a strike from sophomore Tess Coorens (Leiden, Netherlands/Visser'T Hooft Lyceum).

Vandam had a strong game in the cage, turning aside 11 shots in a losing effort.

Notes & Quotes
"We were really proud with how we came back, but we have to give a little more effort on the field to get a better result," Rider Head Coach Lori Hussong said. "When it comes to 7-on-7 overtime it's the team that wants it the most that comes out victorious. La Salle wanted it a little more than we did and they came out with the win."

"That was tough as nails defense at the end of regulation when them getting three corners with no time on the clock," Hussong added. "We had chances in overtime that we did not take advantage. La Salle attacked with speed and confidence and we were tentative."
