Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEIVLLE—Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match to Siena College on Saturday afternoon.
“I was very pleased with the way the men and women's team played today,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “The Siena women are always in the mix to win the conference championship. The Siena men's team came in with a stronger squad than the last two years. They had four new international players playing in the top four positions.”
For the Rider men (0-2, 0-1 MAAC), sophomore Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville/Hamilton North (Nottingham)) was a 1-6, 7-6, 10-5 winner at sixth singles.
“In singles, Ryan was the lone winner, playing a very defensive type game and winning the super tiebreaker in the third set,” Potkay said. “Chris (Popso) and Matt (Begley) went to three sets and lost in their tiebreakers.”
For the Bronc women (0-1, 0-1 MAAC), freshman Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) won five games at second singles before losing 6-3, 6-2 in her collegiate debut and junior Danielle Scrudato (Califon/Voorhees) won five games at fifth singles before falling 6-3, 6-2.
“In singles play Danielle, Vanessa (Canda) and Cyd played very well and kept matches close,” Potkay added.
Playing at first singles, sophomore Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS) won four games before losing 6-3, 6-1.
The Rider men host St. Francis Brooklyn on September 21 and the Bronc women are back on the court September 24, also against St. Francis Brooklyn.
