JERSEY CITY—The Rider University men's tennis team lost to Saint Peter's University 6-1 on the indoor courts at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City on Saturday.

“Conditions were hot and muggy in the bubble,” said head coach Doug Potkay.  “The top two singles players for Saint Peter's had monster first serves.”

For Rider, freshman Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville/Hamilton North (Nottingham)) won 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles, recording his 10th singles win of the season.

“Both Ryan and Matthew Begley played well,” said Potkay.  They both kept their opponents off balance with slices and off pace shots.”

A junior from Pennington (Hopewell Valley Central), Begley lost 6-3, 6-4 at third singles.

Sophomore Chris Popso (Florence) and freshman Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) teamed up for a 6-2 win at second doubles but the Peacocks won two of three doubles matches to claim the team point.

“Chris and Brandon played their best doubles match of the season,” Potkay said.  “They communicated well and kept to their game plan.”

The Rider women play at Saint Joseph's University on Sunday with the Bronc men returning to action on April 21 against Sacred Heart.
