ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.—The Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Niagara University on Friday afternoon.
“Both teams played hard,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “Everyone competed with confidence.”
For the Rider men, freshman Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) won 6-1, 6-4 at fifth singles with freshman Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville/Hamilton North (Nottingham)) scoring a 6-1, 6-1 victory at sixth singles.
For Ciaccio it was his seventh singles win of the season and he improved to 3-1 in MAAC play.
“The men's team earned two wins against a talented Niagara squad that swept Rider 7-0 last season,” Potkay said. “Brandon won his first match of the spring with an attacking style and really elevated his game and Ryan continues to frustrate his opponents with his slices and his slice serve.”
For the Bronc women, sophomore Montana Morris (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) lost a hard fought match, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker) at sixth singles.
“Montana lost a tough match,” Potkay said. “She was leading 6-5 in the tiebreaker.”
Pending the weather on Monday, both the Rider men and women are scheduled to host Loyola Maryland at 2pm.
