Rider University 2, Bryant University 1
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—For the second game in a row the Broncs dominated play. The difference on Sunday was that the Broncs came out on the winning end. “We didn't play that much better (than in 3-1 loss to Fairfield) but we did score twice today,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong.
The Broncs defeated Bryant in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Sunday.
Rider (7-6, 1-1) senior Kalyn O'Brien (Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored in the 51st minute to break at 1-1 tie. “KK played an outstanding game,” Hussong said about O'Brien. “She really played her heart out, as all the seniors did.”
It was her second goal of the season and the 13th of her career.
Senior Carlota Alsina (Barcelona, Spain) tied the score at 1-1 with 10 minutes left in the first half. It was her second goal of the season and the 14th of her career.
Bryant took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute off of a deflection. “I was very happy with the way we responded to that goal,” Hussong said.
Rider out-shot Bryant 23-4. The Broncs had 17 penalty corners to none for Bryant. “Our defense played very well,” Hussong said. “We were dominating.”
Rider freshman goalkeeper Emily Gilligan (West Deptford) made three saves. “Emily did not have to do a whole lot,” Hussong said.
Bryant came into the game with a 1-10 overall record, but the one win was a 6-0 MAAC win over LIU Brooklyn on Friday.
Rider won 1-0 at Bryant last year. The last time Bryant came to Lawrenceville (2014) the Broncs won 3-2. Rider leads the all-time series with Bryant 8-1, the lone Bryant win coming in 2013.
Rider plays at Sacred Heart Friday night. “Every game right now is going to be important,” Hussong said. “We need to do a better job at scoring. Goals are important.”
