Track's Sandvig, Wrestling's Walsh
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Karoline Sandvig of the indoor track & field team and Chad Walsh of the wrestling team are the Rider University Athletes of the Month for all competition in December.
Sandvig, a sophomore thrower from West Windsor, NJ (West Windsor Plainsboro South), qualified for the ECAC Championships in the weight throw in the very first meet of the season, the New Year's Invitational held at Princeton University.
Walsh, a sophomore 157 pounder from Cherry Hill, NJ (Camden Catholic), won eight of 10 matches in December, placed third at the prestigious Midlands Championships, and was named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week.
The two losses Walsh suffered in December were to the third and seventh ranked wrestlers in the nation. The sixth seed at Midlands, Walsh defeated the eighth seed in the battle for third place. Earlier in the tournament he pinned the third seed and defeated the 11th seed twice, once by fall.
On the season Walsh is 14-4 overall, 4-2 in dual meets and is ranked ninth in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, 14th by InterMat.
Sandvig placed second in the weight throw in her only meet of the season, with a distance of 16.37 meters. As a freshman last year she placed third in the MAAC Indoor Championships in the weight throw.
