LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University women's basketball team was out-scored 25-8 in the opening quarter as the first place Marist College Red Foxes cruised to a 74-56 win over the Broncs on Saturday evening in Alumni Gymnasium.
“Marist came out hot and our defense put us behind the eight ball,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “That first quarter really got us.”
For Rider (4-17, 1-11 MAAC), freshmen Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, Pa./Beaver Area) and Lexi Stover (Malvern, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) each had 12 points to pace the Rider offense as the Broncs out-scored Marist 23-9 in the final 10 minutes.
“Both Lexi (Posset) and Lexi (Stover) were out there, playing with no fear,” Milligan said. “The two of them gave us their best and they do that every day.”
Posset played a career-high 25 minutes and added four assists with Stover playing 12 minutes, shooting 4-8 from the field including three field goals from long distance.
Junior Robin Perkins (Willingboro/Trenton Catholic), the second leading scorer in the conference, was held to 1-11 shooting and finished with five points. Perkins entered play averaging 14.6 points per game.
Marist (11-11, 10-2 MAAC) was led by 19 points from junior Sydney Coffey and 13 points and 12 rebounds from sixth year senior Tori Jarosz.
The Red Foxes held a 42-14 advantage in the paint and out-scored Rider 14-0 on fast break opportunities.
Also for the Broncs, junior Julia Duggan (Marmora/Ocean City) had 11 rebounds, five on the offensive glass with junior Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) adding nine points and five rebounds.
Sophomore C'quoya Haughton (Albany, N.Y./Stoneleigh Burnham Prep) returned from missing the last two games due to injury and had eight points, six rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes off the bench.
Rider held a 47-43 rebounding advantage.
Marist shot 44 percent (27-61) from the field with Rider going 20-68 (29 percent).
Marist won its seventh in a row and Rider suffered its fourth straight defeat.
Rider and Marist teamed up with the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer and Go 4 The Goal Foundation to raise awareness and donations in the fight against the disease.
The Red Foxes won for the 27th time in a row in the series and improved to 42-13 all-time against the Broncs.
Rider hosts Iona College on Sunday, February 7 as part of National Girls and Women in Sports day at 1pm.
