EDINBORO, PA—The Broncs won five of the 10 bouts but it was not enough to defeat 19th ranked Edinboro in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Saturday.
“Hopefully in another week or so we'll be back to full strength,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
Edinboro (7-6, 5-0 EWL), the defending EWL Champion, jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a tech fall, the deciding points in the match.
In battles of nationally ranked wrestlers, Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), ranked 13th, defeated Edinboro's Austin Matthews, ranked eighth, 15-11. “Chad looked really good today,” Taylor said. “Chad set a great pace and he keeps getting better.”
Edinboro's Patricio Lugo, ranked 12th, defeated Rider sophomore B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), ranked 17th, 8-6. “B.J. lost to an outstanding freshman,” Taylor said. “He has to get through the mental toughness coming back from an injury.”
Also for Rider (5-8, 1-2 EWL) senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won at 133 to cut the Edinboro lead to 5-3 and junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) won at 141 for a 6-5 Rider lead. “They both did a nice job today,” Taylor said. “Paulie got off to a good start. Deutsch wrestled well again. He has been wrestling well since he got back.”
Junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won at 197 to cut the Edinboro lead to 18-12 and sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) won at heavyweight over the 19th ranked wrestler for the final score. “Mauro did a great job,” Taylor said. “He's starting to learn better positioning. Wolfe got the job done.”
Edinboro defeated Rider 20-16 last year, with each team winning five bouts. “We're getting closer,” Taylor said. “If we were at full strength today we might have pulled it out, although Curt (Delia, filling in for 14th ranked Conor Brennan) did a good job today.”
Rider travels to Cleveland State for an EWL dual meet Sunday. “Cleveland State just had a good win over Clarion,” Taylor said. “All the EWL teams are tough. You have to show up and be ready in this league.”
