Men's College Tennis
Fordham University 5, Rider University 2
LAWRENCEVILLE—Sophomore Diego Delgado (Lara, Venezuela/Colegio Rioclaro) won his first collegiate singles match and teamed with sophomore Chris Popso (Florence) for a win at first doubles but it wasn't enough as the Rider University men's tennis team lost a non-conference match to Fordham University 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
“Overall, the team played extremely well,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “Diego won his first collegiate match by overwhelming his opponent with big top spin forehands.”
Delgado won 6-0, 6-3 at second singles and teamed with Popso for a 7-5 victory at first doubles.
“I played really well,” Delgado said. “I didn't give too many chances to my opponent. I was consistent and didn't make too many errors or miss that many shots. I'm very happy winning my first match, hopefully the first of many.”
“Diego and Chris played a solid match at first doubles,” Potkay said. “It was their first win together this season.”
Also for the Broncs, freshman Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville/Hamilton North (Nottingham)) was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at sixth singles for his first collegiate non-tournament victory.
“Ryan won in his usual way, by frustrating his opponent and keeping him off balance,” Potkay added.
The Rider women are back in action on Wednesday when the Broncs host Marist College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match. The men return to the court on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas.
