Riede All-Tournament
EASTON, Pa.—The Rider University volleyball team split two matches on the final day of the Lafayette Invitational Saturday afternoon.Freshman Hailey Riede (Haworth/Northern Valley-Demarest) earned all-tournament honors for the third time this season after averaging 2.23 kills per set and blocking 10 shots in the three matches.Rider (7-8) defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 26-24, 25-19, 25-21 in the opener and took the opening two sets from the host Leopards of Lafayette 25-18, 25-22 before losing 25-23, 25-21, 15-12 in the final three sets.
“We played a great rebound match after losing in five last night,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “We moved the ball around well and found splits in the block to score.”
The Broncs went 1-2 in the tournament, losing in five sets against the New Jersey Institute of Technology 3-2 late Friday evening.
The third set against Lafayette was one of the wildest ones in recent history with Rider spotting Lafayette a 13-0 lead before the Broncs went on a 17-6 run, cutting a 17-5 deficit to 23-22 in the eventual 25-23 loss.
“The second match is a tough pill to swallow,” Feliciano said. “We had all the momentum after set two and we need to learn that when we have a team down, we have to finish and not let them back in the match. To the credit of Lafayette, they gave up their bodies a lot more on balls we usually score on.”
For Rider in the opener against the Terriers, junior Ryan Ackermann (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had 13 kills and 10 digs, attacking .423 with freshman Catie Harding (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) adding 10 kills and 10 digs.
The setters were led by sophomore Veronica Koval (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) who had 23 assists with senior Brandie Hill (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) adding 21 assists.
The match featured 18 ties and nine lead changes.
In the second match against Lafayette (8-3), Riede had 11 kills and three blocks with Harding compiling 20 digs, 15 kills and three service aces.
Harding averaged 3.15 kills per set and 3.85 digs per set in the tournament.
Hill had 30 assists and 19 digs with sophomore Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, Pa. (Merion Mercy Academy) adding 29 digs.
Freshman Savannah Logan (Jupiter, Fla./Benjamin) had 10 kills and attacked .214 for the Broncs.
Rider defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 3-1 earlier this season.
The Broncs travel to Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday evening for the final non-conference match of the regular season. Rider resumes play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference against Marist College on Saturday, September 26 at 1pm in Alumni Gymnasium.
