STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Rider University men's tennis team won matches at third singles and fourth singles in a 5-2 non-conference loss at Wagner College on Monday afternoon.

“It was a great effort today,” said head coach Doug Potkay.

For the Broncs at third singles, sophomore Ahmed Al-Shawafi (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) was victorious 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 with sophomore Matthew Begley (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) scoring a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win at fourth singles.

“Matt and Ahmed played smart and exploited their opponent's weaknesses, each winning in three sets,” Potkay said.

For Al-Shawafi, it was his second win of the season with Begley winning for the third time this season.

“Number one and three doubles also played well,” Potkay added.

Rider also lost to Wagner in the fall by a 7-0 score.

The Rider men host Sacred Heart on Thursday at 3pm.
