Box Score Women's College Basketball
Maryland, Baltimore County 58, Rider University 53
BALTIMORE, Md.—The University of Maryland, Baltimore County stormed back from a 14 point deficit, outscoring the Broncs 19-5 in the final quarter as the Rider University women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon at the RAC Arena.
For Rider (2-1), sophomore Julia Duggan (Marmora/Ocean City) had 14 points, six rebounds and four blocks, playing 35 minutes.
“Jules played tough for us,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “We just didn't have enough consistency on either end of the floor.”
Trailing 47-34, UMBC ended the third quarter with a 5-1 run and the Retrievers opened the fourth quarter with a 14-3 run, taking a 53-51 lead with 1:13 left in the game.
“We didn't really defend at all,” said Milligan who saw her squad with only four steals after 17 in the previous game against St. Francis Brooklyn. “I'm just disappointed in the effort. We made a lot of silly mistakes. When you have a lead, you have to defend and the defense let us down today.”
Rider committed a season-high 21 turnovers in the contest.
“Our spacing was off on the perimeter so we had some easy picks with the angles we were throwing the ball at,” said Milligan. “Some of the passes were flat.”
UMBC (2-2) made three of four free throws in the final 17 seconds for the final score as Rider shot 1-11 from the field in the final 10 minutes.
Rider had a chance to tie the game in the final 10 seconds but the Broncs missed a three-pointer and subsequent put back after securing the offensive rebound.
Rider out-rebounded the Retrievers 32-27, including 11-7 on the offensive glass.
Trailing 2-0, UMBC went on an 11-0 run to take a nine-point lead 3:43 into the game before senior Manon Pellet (Marseille, France) hit a three-pointer after a Bronc timeout and layups by sophomore Kamila Hoskova (Czech Republic) and junior Robin Perkins (Willingboro/Trenton Catholic) got Rider to within four, at 13-9 with 3:25 left in the opening quarter.
“We made undisciplined mistakes that gave UMBC the early lead,” Milligan said.
Playing 32 minutes, Pellet had eight points, five rebounds and five assists with Hoskova scoring two points in 10 minutes and Perkins had 11 points in 35 minutes of action.
“Manon played her heart out, as she always does,” said Milligan.
Pellet hit her second three-pointer of the quarter, bringing Rider within 16-14 with 1:59 left in the opening period.
UMBC scored eight of the final 12 points of the quarter to end the first period with 24-18 lead.
Freshman Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, Pa./Beaver Area) knocked down a three-pointer, bringing Rider to within one point 24-23 1:35 into the second quarter as part of a 5-0 run.
Posset finished with five points and two rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.
Freshman Lexi Stover (Malvern, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) hit a layup with :48 left to tie the game 28-28 and Duggan had an offensive rebound and put back at the buzzer to give the Broncs a 30-28 lead at intermission.
UMBC went 0-10 from the field in the second quarter and was held to four free throws over the 10 minute span.
Rider opened the second half with an 8-0 run, four points by sophomore C'quoya Haughton (Albany, N.Y./Stoneleigh Burnham Prep) as the Broncs built a 10-point lead and Perkins hit a three-pointer with 4:25 left in the third quarter to give the Broncs a 45-31 lead, their largest of the game.
“I liked the way C'quoya came in and gave us great minutes,” said Milligan. “She gave us good energy off the bench. She's in the gym every day and works her tail off for us. She is a formidable presence for us in the post.”
Haughton had a career-high 10 points on five for seven shooting and added four rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes off the bench.
UMBC went to the free throw line 26 times, making 17 with Rider only attempting 12 (making nine). Rider was called for 25 fouls to 13 for the Retrievers.
“That's the way the whistle goes sometimes,” Milligan added.
UMBC leads the series 7-4 and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Broncs. Rider and UMBC are former East Coast Conference rivals from the early 1990s.
A win would have given Rider a 3-0 start for the first time since the 1982-83 season when the Broncs won four in a row to start that campaign.
“We learned a tough lesson that we have to put four quarters together,” Milligan said. “I don't like the way we are starting games.”
Rider hosts Mercer County rival and national power Princeton University Tuesday night in Alumni Gymnasium.
“Princeton is a hometown rivalry and it's always a fun game,” Milligan added. “Princeton is a great team that has been on a great run over the past several years. We are looking forward to getting back home and playing in front of our home crowd.”
