LAWRENCEVILLE—Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a non-conference match to Mount St. Mary's on Monday.
For the Rider women, freshman Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS) won 7-5. 6-0 at second singles for the only Bronc point of the day.
“Vanessa had a tough first set and played a bit conservative,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “She gained confidence in her forehand and over powered her opponent in the second set.”
For the Bronc men, freshman Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) won his opening set 7-6 (10-4) before losing the second set 6-3, with the fifth singles match stopped by darkness.
“Brandon played an aggressive style of game,” Potkay said. “He moved his opponent from side to side with hard hit forehands and backhands before the match was stopped by darkness.”
Both teams host St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday.
