Drexel University 4, Rider University 0
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Rider University field hockey team lost at Drexel University on Friday evening.
"Drexel is an outstanding team," said head coach Lori Hussong. "We hung tough and our players gave their all and their best effort."
The Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 6:44 into the game when Drexel's shot was deflected home in front of the goal.
Less than six minutes later, at the 12:01 mark, another redirect from in close beat junior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) and Drexel (5-3) led by two goals.
Drexel led 2-0 at intermission.
Just 53 seconds into the second half is all it took for Drexel to increase its lead to 3-0 and the Dragons wrapped up the scoring with 1:20 left in the game.
Prettyman made one save, playing the first 36:53 before giving way to rookie Hannah Isaacs (Piscataway) who made three saves in the final 33:07.
Rider (3-5) was out-shot 17-4 and the Dragons held a 10-3 penalty corner advantage.
Sophomore Kalyn O'Brien (Southampton/Seneca), senior Stacey Dileo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde), sophomore Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and freshman Megan Eppley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each had shots for Rider.
Drexel and Rider last met on September 25, 2013 when the Broncs almost upset the 18th ranked Dragons before losing 2-1. Drexel recorded the game-winner with just 5:42 remaining in regulation.
Rider has won 11 of the 22 games all-time against Drexel with two games ending in a tie. Drexel defeated the Broncs 3-0 in the 2012 season opener, also in Philadelphia. Rider last defeated Drexel in 1995.
The Broncs celebrate Alumni Day and host Villanova on Ben Cohen Field this Sunday at noon. Almost 50 alumni are expected back on campus.
"We are going to go back, watch the film, see what we did well and what we need to work on," Hussong said,
