Rider Second in Inaugural hOURglass Rivalry

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Monmouth University claimed the first annual hOURglass Rivalry crown, with Rider finishing second and Saint Peter's finishing third.

Since Rider, Monmouth and Saint Peter's are all about an hour from each other, the three-way rivalry between the New Jersey Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams called the hOURglass was established last year.  Similar to the MAAC's Commissioner Cup, the annual winner of the hOURglass is decided by the competition of sports between the three universities.

Monmouth won the trophy, which takes into account, for scoring purposes, all of the sports that the three rivals sponsor which compete in the conference, by accumulating 35 points, while Rider finished second with 30 and Saint Peter's compiled 27.

“The first year of the hOURglass rivalry was great and generated interest in the various contests between all three schools, not only from the standpoint of our fans and the media, but it made each competition a little more important to our student-athletes and coaches as well because of the points awarded,” said Karin Torchia, Rider's Senior Women's Administrator and Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs.  “Now in the second year, we hope to come out on top and bring the trophy to Rider's campus.”

The scoring between the sports which compete head-to-head, with the exception of men's and women's basketball, awards one point to the prevailing team. For men's and women's basketball, the winner is awarded two points. For the sports which have a conference championship, such as men's and women's cross country and track and field, the highest-finishing team among the three receives three points, second place gets two points and third place is awarded one point.
